Aaron Brewer, Cecilia Edefalk, Seth Edenbaum, Katharina Grosse Press Release
We cordially invite you to view our forthcoming group show, with works by Aaron Brewer, Cecilia Edefalk, Seth Edenbaum, and Katharina Grosse at the gallery, or on the web.
Cecilia Edefalk, Seth Edenbaum, and Katharina Grosse’s paintings are related in their interest in the figure. Edefalk’s image of Laurel and Hardy is painted in shades of grey on a circular canvas. The canvas was exhibited in the artist’s first museum retrospective at the Kunsthalle Bern last fall as part of an installation with 6 other paintings of the same subject ranging in size from 18″ to 66″ in diameter. later this year, Edefalk will have a retrospective in her native Sweden at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
Katharina Grosse‘s expanse of brown, yellow, and light blue (11′ x 36’, 300 x 1100; overall) brushed on 3 sheets of paper, relates to the viewer as a participating figure. Grosse, who has widely exhibited in Germany, showed recently at the Sydney Biennial and had a solo show in New York with Petra Bungert in 1998. A monograph on her work is due for publication.
Seth Edenbaum had a two-person-show (with Sarah Rossiter) at Galerie Xavier Fiol, Palma, Spain, 1998, and will open the coming fall season with his third solo show at the gallery. Idiosyncratic as ever, his unprimed “Standing Figures” against a white background are painted in a combined gestural and minimalist manner.
An MFA graduate of Tyler School, Philadelphia, Aaron Brewer worked recently as a researcher for a forthcoming Duchamp Archive. His sculpture, assembled from scraps, is loosely formal and charged with an uncommon personal narrative and sexual energy.
