Thomas Erben Gallery is very pleased to announce the first New York solo exhibition by Vargas-Suarez Universal (b. 1972 in Mexico City). Throughout August, the artist drew murals covering the gallery’s entire wall space. One drawing is completely improvised; other sections are based on works on paper using floor plans of the Tate Modern and 10 Ludgate Place, both visited by the artist in London, as well as the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia.

Added intricate dynamic patterns dissolve the original geometry and two- dimensional surfaces, introducing spatial fluidity and an abundance of visual references:

Visionary space architecture, Mayan ornamental patterning, microchip design, the early cubist-surrealist and geometricist works of Wilfredo Lam and Roberto Matta or the figurative/diagrammatic paintings by Joacquin Torres-Garcia.  The architectonic and urban qualities are reminiscent as well of the Situationist project of Constant’s “New Babylon”.

Over the past three years, other wall works of the artist have been included in group exhibitions at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, The Queens Museum of Art, and El Museo del Barrio. Upcoming solo exhibitions are scheduled at The Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY in January 2003, and the Jersey City Museum, NJ in September 2003.
